I've been twice, the second time mostly to make sure what I saw the first time wasn't a hallucination.

On that Occassion, a porn starlet and her "manager" asked if I would like to participate in their pending gang bang video. They needed 150 guys and I could be #75. I would be charged $100 and receive a free DVD of my performance. They were carrying a big binder of polaroids, each being the picture and contact info for numbers 1 - 74. I declined, but I've always thought it was an interesting approach to financing.jimhenshawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07815834271470133872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20291006.post-1167009985580643302006-12-24T17:26:00.000-08:002006-12-24T17:26:00.000-08:00Happy holliers.Waiting for part three next year. The film was delayed... war broke out... and in tht time Bacall became a big star. So they did reshoots to beef up her role... and recast some roles and cut out others in the process. The "new" version is much much better than the "original version" (the one you haven't seen).

I think the way Chandler patched together different stories makes for one heck of a confusing novel (and film from that novel). It's kind of like putting three different items in a blender - you usually end up with a mess.

- Bill

PS: I swear, part 3 is coming soon!wcmartellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18075242897910568801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20291006.post-1166403724037280352006-12-17T17:02:00.000-08:002006-12-17T17:02:00.000-08:00Thanks, Mr Submarine, for the Big Sleep stuff. But...Thanks, Mr Submarine, for the Big Sleep stuff. But there's still a mystery about who killed the chauffeur.

I've read one biog of Chandler, and came away with the sense that good writers are so sad, lazy, and put upon. And heavy boozers. I hadn't twigged the three story stitch-together.

Laura, I didn't know there was a different version of the Bogart/Bacall version. Bogart's ear-lobe tugging is annoying, the extended scene with the law-swot bookshop girl is too much, and beautiful Bacall is in way too many scenes. The Michael Winner production set in England is more faithful to the novel, but it still doesn't hit the mark.

Carmen and Rusty Reagan are the heart of the story. But nobody has bothered to cast a good Carmen, or just focus on the big reveal at the end.

I think Chandler's final page was imitating Joyce's monologue in The Dead - "like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead". Did a great job. But who killed the effin' chauffeur?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20291006.post-1166382847288942862006-12-17T11:14:00.000-08:002006-12-17T11:14:00.000-08:00We just got a Bogie/Bacall DVD set that has THE BI...We just got a Bogie/Bacall DVD set that has THE BIG SLEEP. We accidently put on the earlier version that is slightly different from the theatrical release. Bacall wears a conspicuous hat w/ veil in one scene & a diff actress plays Mrs. Mars (??)-- the woman in hiding.

We didn't even know there were 2 versions! On the DVD there's a little doc explaining the differences in each version & why they have diff scenes in each.

The doc said the earlier version (w/ veil)is easier to follow & makes more sense plot-wise. I dunno, i still couldn't follow it. :-/

For those who want a greater insight into the plot, try getting the DVD that has the earlier version & see if it makes more sense. The set we have is called "Bogie & Bacall: The Signature Collection".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20291006.post-1166318426308852712006-12-16T17:20:00.000-08:002006-12-16T17:20:00.000-08:00I'll get back to you on THE BIG SLEEP. Do you know...I'll get back to you on THE BIG SLEEP. Do you know the background of the novel? Chandler had written all of these longish short stories for Black Mask (and some other pulps like Dime Detective) and when the novel market opened up, he basically just took 3 of his short stories and combined them to create a novel. So one story about the pornographer Geiger (Killer In The Rain) gets connected to a story about the murder of Sternwood's son-in-law and a story about Eddie Mars and a corrupt police department... and now Mars is Geiger's silent partner and the son-in-law is now Carmen's boyfriend who ran off with Mars' wife. This tangle of stories makes for something that's often hard to follow - too densely plotted. If you want to know who killed who in the movie, I actually can answer that - despite the rumor that nobody knew who killed one of the characters, I think it's all actually there on screen. Carmen killed Sean Reagan. The Chauffer killed Geiger (because he was in love with Carmen). That great character (whose name I can't remember right now - but he's the one who can't look Marlowe in the eyes) killed the chauffer and took the photo of Carmen at the crime scene to blackmail Old Man Sternwood. Geiger's boyfriend kills that guy and takes off running - Marlowe captures him with the "gotta match" ploy. Eddie Mars' boys kill Eddie Mars (though the book works differently). Did I leave someone out? Oh, yeah - Elisha Cook's character is killed by Bob Steele's character, who is killed by Marlowe in that great shoot out in front of the gas station. Anybody else?

- Billwcmartellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18075242897910568801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20291006.post-1166147883212580432006-12-14T17:58:00.000-08:002006-12-14T17:58:00.000-08:00Strange neighbourhoods you frequent, either side o...Strange neighbourhoods you frequent, either side of the Atlantic.

Where's all the sex? Apparently, many people picked up copies of "Sixes and the One Eyed King," but it doesn't surprise me that they're hesitant to distribute a black-and-white tribute to Rod Serling, even if it did get festival response. Still, the producer/director said he learned a lot from attending, and I'm hopeful about future projects. Thanks so much for the pre-festival advice you provided.

- "Totiwos"Patriciahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06157945815958110755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20291006.post-1165421618635400162006-12-06T08:13:00.000-08:002006-12-06T08:13:00.000-08:00Great post Bill! I can smell the "Loews desperation" right now.

You forgot a couple of folks:

Menachem - who sets up at the corner table on the lower restaurant balcony area and smokes cigars all day. Not bad for a guy who made all those Chuck Norris and Michael D. films in the 80's...

Jens (not his real name) - who is a european guy with a dojo here in town who gets to know all these martial artists and becomes a "producer" on their movies.
